Trail Ridge Road & Mountain Driving Tips

One of the things I'd like to do with everyone is head to the top of Rocky Mountain National Park on Trail Ridge Road. This is the highest paved road in the US and the views are completely breathtaking.  Within the first few miles, you will ascend over 4,000 feet. By the time you reach the

top, you're well above tree-line where there is so little oxygen and such cool temperatures that trees cannot live thus creating a glorious view of the Rocky Mountain. It's a safe drive and we've done it many times, but if you've never driven in the mountains, new challenges exist. A lot of the drive depends on the conditions at the top. We've been up there and been able to see for miles and miles, yet other trips the farthest we've been able to see anything is the top of the 10 foot snow bank in the parking lot. There are a few parks along the route to stop at for a rest, pictures, or a picnic. 

Mountain Driving Tips

• If you get carsick, sit in the front seat and/or look out the front windows. 
• Go slow and use a low gear. 
• Don't hug the middle--on-coming drivers are doing the same thing. 
• If you're the driver, don't watch the scenery. There are many pull-outs where you can stop to enjoy the view. 
• Plan on the trip taking 2-4 hours. While it's only a few miles, the turns are wide and the traffic is fairly slow.
